The plans have been made as the Scranton community celebrates 150 years! Saturday, June 29, will bring folks from near and far to help Scranton observe its sesquicentennial.
An eager committee has pulled together a day full of free entertainment. They’re praying for good weather to bring large crowds to the celebration.
The parade is always the cornerstone of any celebration. Registration can made done ahead of time with forms from the website or starting at 9 am Saturday at the Community Center. The wheels will roll at 10:30 am with Dean and Donald “Chop” Gibson serving as grand marshals.
A beautiful quilt will be awarded to the lucky winner of a raffle with money raised going to help support the festivities. It will be displayed in the Community Center throughout the day with the drawing held after the Alumni Play and Chorus performance in the gym, approximately 5 pm.
The Churdan Town and Country Band will also perform in the gym in conjunction with the play and chorus, which begins at 4:15 p.m.
Jo Anne Schnebly welcomes quilters of all skill levels to discuss their common love of quilting at the Marchant Memorial Library from 1 – 2 pm.
There’s no need to pack a picnic lunch. More than ten food vendors will be scattered around town to provide festival goers with a variety of selections. Local vendors include John 15 Vineyard, Greene County Lamb Producers and Deardorff Highland Cattle of Yale.
Vendors and crafts will showcase their creations outside the Community Center. More than a dozen businesses plan to participate.
Classic cars, trucks, tractors and motorcycles will be displayed on Main Street following the parade. Viewers will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite vehicle who will take home the Viewers’ Choice Award.
The Scranton Fire Department is hosting an adult beverage tent, starting at noon on the south end of Main Street. Meet your friends and relax with a cool drink.
Denny Matthews is scheduled to provide music from 7:30 – 11 pm.
Schedule of Events
8:30 – 10 am. Breakfast with Mayor Cole Gustoff, Community Center.
9 am. Bike decoration for parade, Marchant Memorial Library.
10:30 am. Parade, begins at Community Center and goes north, west two blocks, then south down Main Street. Dean and Chop Gibson will be honored by riding in style in the parade.
11:30 am. – 4 pm. Memorabilia Sale, Booth near Community Center. Memorabilia items include: T-Shirts, canvas bags, commemorative coins, Koozies, magnets, postcards and note cards. Scranton Cookbooks are available at the Library and Memory Room in the Community Center.
11:30 am. – Evening. Food available around town.
11:30 am. – 1 pm. Car, Motorcycle and Tractor Show, Main Street. Viewers will vote for Peoples Choice.
12 – 1 pm. Scavenger hunt, starts and ends at Marchant Memorial Library.
12 – 2 pm. Kids Rides – train and ferris wheel, Community Center area.
12 – 4 pm. Open Carnival (inflatables and games), United Methodist Church.
12 – 4 pm. Face Painting – Twyla Brede, Community Center yard.
12 – 4 pm. Wood Carving – Andy Klindt, Lawn south of Fire Station.
12 – 4 pm. Art Show by Michelle Robson, UMC Fellowship Hall.
12 – 4 pm. Vendor Show – Crafters, Community Center Lawn.
12 – 4 pm. Family yard games: includes teenaged frozen T-shirt contest, Children’s tractor pedal pull sponsored by Greene County Farm Bureau, Yardzee, Cornhole toss and more, Community Center yard.
